A super day was had by all on Saturday 26th June, 2021 at Southern Counties, Newbury Showground. The FBCE held its postponed Championship Show from 2020 in conjunction with it, there were 2 rings next to each other and while the SC judge Mr Ian Chapman started in his ring with the dogs, our judge Mrs Jackie Mavro started with bitches in our ring. The weather stayed fantastic all day, with a cool breeze and dry and sunny. A massive THANK YOU to both our judge and to all the exhibitors for their entries and those that managed to make it on the day.

Kennel Club limits ‘hereditary clear’ status to support eradication of health conditions 4th September 2019
From January 2022, the Kennel Club will limit the assignment of ‘hereditary clear’ status of registered dogs to two generations. This change will be put in place to safeguard against the impact that dogs with an incorrect ‘hereditary clear’ status could have on health issues within a breed.
Following on from a recent Kennel Club study, published in the journal of Canine Genetics and Epidemiology, the decision to restrict hereditary status was made by the Kennel Club Board on the recommendation of the Dog Health Group.
Hereditary clear status is given to dogs that are determined to be free of specific genetic material linked to a particular inherited disease. The Kennel Club’s registration system assigns a dog this status if their parents are known to be clear, either because they have both been DNA tested as clear, or because they are hereditary clear themselves.
Dogs could be mistakenly given a false hereditary clear status for a number of reasons; for example if there has been a failure of laboratory protocols, pedigree errors or incorrectly recorded parentage. In these instances it is unlikely that the inaccuracies would be noticed immediately, but rather that several generations later many dogs throughout the breed descended from the individual with the original incorrect status will also have erroneous hereditary status, and the well-intended mating of two such apparently hereditary clear dogs risks producing affected puppies.
The Kennel Club research analysed the risks faced by a population following the incorrect assignment of hereditary status and determined that the rate of dogs with false hereditary clear status could rise considerably over a fairly small number of generations, particularly for genetic conditions that are more common.
To reduce the knock-on effect of these errors, and the risk of unintentionally breeding affected puppies, the Kennel Club will be ensuring that from January 2022, the ‘hereditary clear status’ will be limited to two generations, unless lineage is verified by DNA parentage profiling recorded by the Kennel Club. DNA parentage profiling is a separate procedure to screening DNA for disease causing mutations, but can often be carried out at the same time by the same laboratory.
Kennel Club Genetics and Research Manager Dr Tom Lewis said: “Kennel Club advice has always been that even apparently ‘clear’ lines should be retested every few generations. This change to hereditary status reinforces that view and ensures that breeders can remain confident that the puppies they produce remain free from disease. DNA tests are helping breeders eradicate health issues in dogs and we want our registration system to maximise the impact these tests are having.”
HEALTH SCHEME UPDATE
The French Bulldog Club of England’s committee, has decided that we will no longer issue certificates or validate any health tests that are returned to us for Non-Recognised Colour French Bulldogs. This took affect from the 31st March 2019.The 4 standard colours are: -Brindle, Fawn,Pied (brindle and white)Fawn Pied (fawn and white)
The Club feels strongly that we are there to maintain the tradition of the standard colours and in awarding certificates, our members feel that we are validating the breeding of non standard colours.
Since its foundation in 1902 the Club and its members have been dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and well being of the breed, more than 100 years later those standards remain unchanged: to adopt the Kennel Club Breed Standard by which French Bulldogs shall be judged; to urge the adoption of that standard upon owners, breeders and exhibitors including the correct and acceptable coat colours for the breed and to breed for health, longevity, and correct conformation.
The club is dedicated to the health and well being of all French Bulldogs and would advise anybody with Non-Recognised Colour dogs to still Health Test before considering breeding, All of the relevant information is available to everyone here on our website on the Health Scheme page.

Linda Quin (Nirojo)
I bought our first French Bulldog, Jasmine (Dameja Extrovert) from Sue McKenna for My husbands birthday present . Taking her to a companion show and getting Reserve best in show got us hooked into showing. Herdaughter Nirojo Imperial Rose (Cookie) went on to get her Junior Warrant, 3 RCC's and Top Puppy that year. I joined the french bulldog committee 6 years ago and have covered the French Bulldog booth at Discover Dogs for the last 10 years. We currently have Jasmine's great great grand daughter with us as well as Cookie now 10 and a few other Frenchies. I've organised the French Bulldog Christmas party for a few years and have home checked for welfare. Our frenchies are part of the family and enjoy lazing about on the sofa and chasing the squirrels in
the garden.

Ged Ling (Tytorro)
I first started showing and breeding dogs in the 1980’s and was very successful with my Poachersfoe Bullmastiffs. With my partner Jane, I have owned French Bulldogs for a little over 7 years and under our affix Tytorro we actively show these and at present have 4 stud book numbers. We occasionally breed a litter once all relevant health testing has been done and again have been successful with our breeding programme , improving our line with each litter. The breed first attracted us many year's ago with their comedic antics and characters but we weren’t too sure how they would live with the oversized cumbersome breeds we had. We need not have worried as they are a hardy little dog and we also do agility with those who are not fans of the show ring. I actively judge many breeds and have recently undertaken the FBCE breed appreciation day and I am thrilled to be asked to judge the Bomlitz special award classes at the club’s open show.

OPEN SHOW-MAIN CLASSES
Vanessa Bryant (Archness)
In 2007 I met the lovely Rick Richardson and his “Bubbles” Riccibet Miss Mink at a local ringcraft class and it was from that point, I knew that my heart belonged to Frenchie Bulldogs. My first Frenchie, Archie, and I hit the show ring in 2009 and we had some very memorable times, mainly with him and his clown-like antics making a fool of me, but I was hugely proud of him winning his CC and BOB at SKC and gaining his Stud Book number. 2016 saw my first litter and both of Archie’s Grandchildren gained their Junior Warrant and Archness Sign O’ The Times currently has 2 RCCs. Having started my judging career in 2012, I am immensely looking forward to judging at the founding breed club's Open Show

SPECIAL AWARDS CLASSES Jean Pratt (Khanin) My love of French Bulldogs comes from the lifelong passion my daughter Michelle holds for them and when she purchased her first show bitch, I decided to have her litter brother and although Michelle housed him…because I still had a handful of Great Danes at home… I showed him. He was BPD at his first Championship Show and I was hooked! I have since owned in partnership with Michelle and my Son in Law Richard, 2 dogs with RCCs, 1 dog from our 1st litter with 2 CCs plus 1 RCC, a BPIB and Top Junior in 2016. I currently support from the side lines ‘Victor’ who is now on 2 RCCs and 1 CC with BOB at 16 months old and although he resides with Michelle, he most definitely is, my dear ‘Grand dog’! I am really looking forward to Judging the Bomlitz Special Awards Classes and thank the committee for inviting me. |

July 2017. Mr Charles Satchell R.I.P
We sadly record the death of Mr Charles Satchell, a Life Member of the French Bulldog Club of England. Charles joined the FBCE in the late 1970’s. His membership application shows that he was Proposed by Mary Baker who was to become a lifelong friend and Seconded by Norman Blagrave of the famous Merrowlea Great Dane affix, and with whom Charles shared many later years together as partners. After Norman’s death Charles adopted the Merrowlea affix and ownership of the French Bulldog breed record holder Ch Merrowlea The Enchantress. Charles had campaigned Emma since she was a puppy,to her ultimate record number of CC’s .
Charle’s own affix was Tenafly, adopted from a TV crime-drama series from 1978 which was set in Los Angeles . The principle character was a Harry Tenafly, a clean living African-American private eye who worked for Hightower Investigations, Inc a large private investigation agency, .
We believe that Evita of Tenafly was the first Frenchie that Charles owned. Evita’s sire was Ch Selholme Dominque and her dam was Topsham Summer Wine, Evita became Charles first Champion in 1983 A granddaughter of Evita owned by Charles called Pollyanna of Merrowlea gained her title (1986) . Tenafly Heresheis a lovely Fawn bitch was made up in 1993. Ch Merrowlea The Entrantress carried Tenafly breeding through her dam , the pied Tenafly Mimi La Blanche Of Talissand
Charles served as a committee member of the FBCE for approximately 20 years and he was Vice Chairman for some of those years. As he lived in Devon and his health was beginning to be troublesome he found the journey to committee meetings was becoming a little too much and it was with regret that he decided to retire shortly after the French Bulldog Club’s 100th Anniversary show.
Charles was a Championship Show judge, awarding CC’s for a total of eleven shows and undertaking his last appointment in 2010. The highlight of his judging career was to judge Crufts , where he wore a red waistcoat with Frenchies all over it, specially made for him in the US. He looked very dapper.
Charles will be remembered as a kind and generous man,a friend to the breed and the FBCE.
